Motorola is set to bring Java to the world of smartcards, cars and embedded systems after licensing the software technology from Sun in the largest such deal to date.
The deal also means that Motorola will help Sun to bring communications and chip technology to the Java platform.
As a result, we are likely to see Java embedded in Motorola handsets, possibly as a way of countering attempts by its competitors to produce personal digital assistant (PDA) devices.
Motorola will also co-sponsor Sun?s 1998 Worldwide Java Developer Conference in March.
