Russian supercomputer developer Professor Boris Babaian said on Friday that he needed venture capital support to show the world the superior chip architecture he has developed to rival Merced.
At the same time, he laughed at the April Fool's Joke that slashdot.org had perpetrated about Linus Torvald allegedly joining his company, Elbrus International, because Finland and Russia were geographically close. Barbaian is chairman and chief technology officer of the Russian firm.
But on a more serious note, he also said that Elbrus, which provides contract services such as software and microprocessor design to Western companies, was facing obstacles to having its Merced competitor manufactured.
"We are a team who designed [a similar technology] to Epic in 1991. We had already fabricated a computer in 1991. Our technology is good, but our fabrication facilities are very poor. We fabricated this in the days of the Iron Curtain, but because of the circumstances, it was very difficult to finish the project."
He continued that, although the technology his team was fashioning ran at three times the speed of Merced, it was very hard to persuade the world of its merits.
"The microprocessor is in a very advanced stage of development. But everyone is very afraid to compete with Intel. If you look at Intel, it hasn't actually been very successful with many of its technologies. The x86 just happened and the i860 and the i960 were not very successful at all," he claimed.
He added: "Intel is a genius in business, but it's not very successful at designing chips."
Barbaian also said that he was currently speaking to chip companies other than Intel about manufacturing the chip.
