Hewlett-Packard (HP) is using embedded chip technology to improve the performance of its latest series of inkjet printers, launched today.
The HP 2000C Professional Series uses chips embedded in printheads and ink cartridges to monitor and control printer performance. Information on ink remaining and life of the printhead can be fed to the user's PC, avoiding unnecessary printing and lowering the cost of ownership, according to HP.
The chips, running proprietary HP software, also manage the internal operation of the printer, controlling ink flow to the print head and compensating for any printhead damage.
Eberhard Kempf, European peripherals product line manager with HP, claimed the 2000C series is in the speed class of laser printers but costs less than most of those at the low end. "We aim to give business users more speed, flexibility and control with these printers," he said.
The HP2000C series also marks the debut of HP's Modular Ink Delivery System, which uses four printheads separated from the ink cartridges.
At half an inch wide, the new printheads are wider than those in HP's previous printers, improving print speed. They have been manufactured using polymide technology, giving them a lifetime of 2,400 colour pages.
Printhead durability has also been improved using a "wet wipe" cleaning system, the company claimed.
This technology, in combination with the embedded chips, allows the HP2000C series to produce full-colour pages at up to five times the speed of HPs best-selling HPDeskJet 690C series printer. The HP2000C series is capable of printing full colour pages at up to two pages per minute (ppm) and monochrome pages at 10 ppm.
Due to ship in September this year, the printers will be available in two versions: the HP2000C for personal desktop use and the HP2000CN for small networks. The latter model includes an HPJetDirect 300X print server, HP JetAdmin management software and a second 250-sheet paper tray. The C will be priced at #600, while the CN will cost #850.
