Cisco?s Easy Connection Package for ISDN is targeted at resellers and network service providers, who can use it as the basis of customised, end-to-end Internet solutions.
The bundled set of facilities includes customer premises equipment (CPE) and applications for ISDN dial-up access to Lans and the Internet. It includes end user software for browsing, file transfer, logging on to remote hosts and sharing documents in real time. Cisco claims this is the most comprehensive one-package solution around, speeding time to market for network and Internet service providers.
?Cisco has showcased its commitment to making service providers more profitable,? said Liza Henderson, consultant at Telechoice.
?The package will decrease time to market and increase brand recognition for network service providers and resellers,? commented Jon Shantz, vice president of Cisco?s service provider market unit.
This is the first in a planned range of bundled CPE solutions, which will be rolled out over the coming year and will address branch offices, Web sites and Internet access for small offices, and security.
The basis of the Easy Connection bundle is the Cisco 760 ISDN router, which comes with multiple interfaces so that multiple telephone lines or special ISDN phones are not required. The router comes with an optional NT1 device and Cisco Remote Plus software for dial access and other applications.
Cisco has also upgraded its IPeXchange Internet Gateway for Netware, which provides access to the Internet without the need for TCP/IP on the desktop. This enables Netware sites to run TCP/IP-based applications and Internet communications over their IPX networks.
The new version includes support for 32-bit applications and, in the NT release, an HTML-based Internet access management tool, called IPeXchange Monitor. This monitors and manages outgoing Internet traffic and connections in a simplified way. It allows network administrators to permit or deny Internet access based on user or group identity, time of day, type of service and destination IP address, or any combination of these. Network activity is managed from one HTML-based interface.
IPeXchange is also available for Unix. Because it is installed on the server, it protects desktops from unauthorised access over public networks. Only one IP address is required to connect a whole Novell network to the corporate Internet/Intranet, so that management is from a single point.
Users can purchase and download the gateway software from Cisco?s corporate Web site. The company also offers a hardware-based gateway, the IPeXchange 1000 routers.
