The future of Internet access is not the PC, according to speakers at IDC's ecommerce forum in Monte Carlo today.
"The future landscape is hand held devices, mobile phones and other gadgets," said Kasper Rorsted, vice president of ecommerce for Compaq. "Consumers can start planning as soon as they get up in the morning, getting stock quotes, checking flights, downloading information they want from the Internet."
"The value is immense," he added. "Surfing is like driving around Paris without a map, you want information that is valuable and customised for you."
Steve Savignano, senior vice president for electronic commerce for Netscape Agreed: "PCs will be a very small proportion of net access, people will be connected 100 per cent of the time so the focus will be personalised services."
The Internet landscape is not technology driven, it is a business model, explained Rorsted.
"You don't study skiing for 10 years and then try it, you try and fix it, you try and fix it, this is how the Web works. The advantage is in the business model not the products, that is the key differentiator," he explained.
Rorsted believes that the Internet is changing customer expectations - suddenly the customer is deciding how he or she is doing business.
"Ease of purchase, cost savings, product customisation and instant access are the keys to a successful ebusiness," he said.
To motivate companies into getting their online strategies in place fast, if they have not already done so, he coined a phrase from Nike - 'go do it'.
