The FBI is investigating yesterday's hacking of anti-virus company Symantec's Web site.
According to company officials, www.symantec.com was hacked into early yesterday but was only affected for 45 minutes before it was restored to normal.
The hackers had posted a page claiming they had infected Symantec's servers with a worm virus, which was spreading though the network infecting files.
The message read: "Ha Ha Ha we've taken over control Symantec. Our Worm has been on your site for over two months." The site was then taken down by the company.
Aled miles, regional director for Symantec UK and Ireland, said the hackers message was a hoax and had had no effect on the company's internal servers.
"It is quite possible to infect all sorts of areas of sites, but the reality is that this was a hoax. It was a publicity stunt but hoaxes can be just as damaging as real infections in terms of time lost and worry caused," he said.
He said hacking is on the increase and that any company in the public eye is under threat.
"If they can hack into the CIA Web site, then anyone is at risk. This is the reality we face," he said, adding: "However, I don't believe we have a reputation issue here and there was no threat to customers."
Miles said Symantec had kept two servers with the hacked site available and online for the FBI which is currently investigating the incident.
"The US Government now views this as an economic threat, many business are online now, just think how this could have affected sites like Amazon.com," he warned.
