The electronic software distribution (ESD) market is heating up with news that InstallShield and Verisign are teaming up to provide secure software distribution.
InstallShield provides software for developers wanting to deliver applications to their customers, and the new deal with Verisign allows InstallShield to bundle digital certificate verification capabilities with its InstallFromTheWeb and PackageForTheWeb products. These packages allow developers to compress all the files required for distribution, including the client setup routines and data files, into one package. This saves the customer time when downloading the software and then handles the installation of the product.
The deal with Verisign allows InstallShield to add validation to this process, so the customer can be confident that the software comes from a reliable source and has not been tampered with or infected with a virus.
In the process, the customer builds up a collection of certificates from trusted developers to encourage future business. This should help with the Internet revolution in software distribution because digitally signed software will make customers feel more secure when buying applications over the Web, claimed Brian Hall, vice president of marketing at InstallShield.
"Our partnership with Verisign will make it easier for developers to include digital certificates with their installations and provide the end user with added security above and beyond standard encryption for Ecommerce applications," he said.
InstallFromTheWeb and PackageForTheWeb are available from the InstallShield Web site for $395 and $295 (#234 and #175) respectively. Verisign Commercial Software Developer IDs cost $400 (#237) per year.
