Compaq, which recently announced plans to sell direct, is looking to hire an additional 2,000 sales people this year. The move is designed to improve contact with customers. According to reports, Compaq CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer has told senior executives that he believes the company is too distant from its customers, which hinders it as it tries to compete with direct marketers like Dell and Gateway 2000.
Hiring has already begun of 1,000 new sales executives in the US with the remaining 1,000 overseas to be hired by the end of the year. Compaq was unable to say exactly how many jobs would be created in the UK.
