HP has made an embittered attack against the Compaq takeover of Digital, and said the merged company will drive away customers.
John Saw, HP technology marketing manager, said: ?If I was a customer of Alpha and DG/UX, I?d be certain this was an investment which was going to disappear.?
Although Saw admitted that his own company?s deal with Intel to develop a Risc architecture also represented a proprietary solution, he believes the Compaq-Digital alliance will be more closed.
Said Saw: ?Compaq is very anti-proprietary but this is very negative to the Risc architecture. They [Compaq] have now bought into a very proprietary Risc architecture. For the last four years, we?ve worked with Intel over Merced.?
He said: ?Pfeiffer cannot afford to continue investing in that kind of architecture. Digital has already previously said, DG/UX is dead. I believe the HP solution has investment protection. If I were an Alpha user, I ?ve just seen the last thread of my investment slipped away.?
