Storage company EMC has responded to claims by Sun and Compaq that they have overtaken its market share by claiming the opposition is frightened of its dominance.
The comments came as the company released its annual results, showing growth of one-third in profitability and turnover.
Mike Maunder, marketing director of EMC UK, said: "Sun-Encore see us as a marauding company from an area in which they're getting highly profitable revenues. But they focus only on data sharing, which is only one part of the storage market."
He said: "Today, we're still the only company that can demonstrate solutions on all the different platforms including mainframes, NT and the rest in an integrated way."
Maunder said that EMC, unlike Compaq, did not sell disk drives in PCs or servers. "The entry level for us is about 200Gbytes. The Compaq-Digital takeover gives them a very strong NT capability in terms of access to the market but their storage solutions are still proprietary to those companies. Most Digital storage is still attached to proprietary Digital boxes."
He said that EMC still considered its main competition to be IBM and Hitachi, but at the enterprise level.
"Because of the way the storage market is changing, you'll hear us talking about enterprise storage, regardless of what it's attached to," he said.
The results for the last financial year demonstrated that, he claimed. Turnover was $2.94 billion, up by 29 per cent from the year before, while net profit rose one-third to to $539 million.
"We've shown 131 per cent growth in our software products and our open storage revenue grew by 94 per cent," boasted Maunder. "On mainframes we now have 50 per cent of the market worldwide."
Part of the reason for that growth was additional requirements from large corporations focusing on the Year 2000 and European Monetary Union issues, claimed Maunder. After companies had identified problems in the software code, they were investing in mirroring storage solutions so that they were able to test the problems online, he explained.
