Reseller Logical has cut back its UK operation in an attempt to become less reliant on Cisco data networking product sales.
The network integrator, which comes from a data background, has made 30 people redundant and is attempting to "re-balance" its skills base with an increased focus on voice and data convergence.
The move leaves the company with about 135 workers in the UK.
Logical UK managing director Simon North admitted: "We didn't have a good year last year. We held a review before Christmas to decide where to position the company.
"To stay purely in the data networking business with a dependency on Cisco was not going to give the company the kind of growth and profitability required."
Mark Darvill, the company's former director of technology and business development, is one of the casualties.
Cisco gold partner Logical will continue to sell the Cisco data networking products but will increase its voice skills and expand its convergence portfolio, added North.
The company is currently in discussions to recruit eight people to bolster its convergence knowledge. "We will bring in the voice skills to enhance our convergence capabilities and refocus our business," said North.
The reseller already works with Ericsson Enterprise on convergence business and is looking at signing a new vendor partner.
Manny Pinon, sales and marketing director at distributor Norwood Adam, said a move from a data background to offer convergence would be a challenge.
"Norwood Adam did this in 1997 and it was more of an evolution rather than a revolution, because we retrained the people we had," he said.
"The redundancies have probably got more to do with the fact that Logical, like all of us, has had a bad time after a poor trading year."
Separately, Logical has launched Logical Direct, a telesales function with a web front end for customers requiring smaller orders.
North said the telesales team would soon be "hitting the phones" to generate business.
