If you're planning to look for another job in the New Year, remember that using buzzwords in your CV can seriously damage your chances of getting a foot in the door.
While poor presentation maintains pole position of HR managers' pet hates, 61 per cent of IT sector respondents to a survey by online jobs service Fish4jobs said use of industry jargon was almost guaranteed to land applications in the bin.
The survey of 500 personnel managers found that buzzwords such as 'gameplan' and phrases such as 'thinking outside the box' were an even bigger turn off than unexplained career gaps or CVs over two pages long.
Other CV irritants include the use of poor quality paper at 15 per cent and irrelevant hobbies such as reading or socialising (seven per cent).
"Your CV and covering letter are critical to making a good first impression," said Fish4jobs director, Simon Devitt. "When applying for a job, candidates should use phrases that are specific to describing relevant skills and achievements, rather than generic terms which sound impressive but mean nothing.
"Saying that you are a team player is largely meaningless. If you want to show an employer that you work well as part of a team then it is best to do so by providing details of the sort of work you have been doing in previous jobs."
A separate study by Fish4jobs found that more people look for jobs in January than in any other month.
Almost a quarter of jobseekers choose the beginning of the year to look for their next career challenge, followed by 15 per cent in April. Less than two per cent of people look for a new job in either October or December.
