Intel has reorganised its business to cater for new technologies by opening a digital imaging division and splitting its PC unit into business and consumer divisions. The digital imaging division will concentrate on digital cameras and PC-based imaging and video applications. Run by vice president Don Whiteside, the group will push Intel's chip products that allow OEMs to make digital cameras. It follows a move made in October by Intel and eight other vendors to introduce standards for digital cameras and related software. The split in the desktop products group means Intel can watch different market segments more effectively as the industry grows, according to president and chief operating officer, Craig Barrett. "The industry is splitting up into large segments," he explained. "We plan to differentiate our products to serve these segments." Vice president Pat Gelsinger will head the business platform group and concentrate on business computers, network computers, workstations and security products. Mike Aymar, also vice president, will control Intel's interest in desktop PCs, set-top boxes and chips in vehicles as head of the consumer group. The company has also divided its Internet and communications group into a small business and networking group under executive vice president Frank Gill and the Intel architecture labs, led by vice president Craig Kinnie. Gill's group covers networking products, management software, video conferencing, reseller products, Internet services and the reseller organisation. Analysts said the move makes sense as the company aims to keep up with the changes in the industry and technology. A company representative said Intel used to have staff in many departments watching digital imaging but has bought those people together. Intel did not say whether any staff will be laid off as a result of the changes.
