BARCELONA: HP has defended its decision to conduct a fierce bidding war with rival Dell for the storage firm 3Par – a frantic period of one-upmanship that eventually saw HP emerge as victor with a bid of $2.4bn.
The deal, which closed last week, had some pundits scratching their heads and wondering whether HP had spent wisely.
HP executive vice president and general manager Dave Donatelli said the critics were wrong and that HP had struck a good deal. He said that 3Par provides the "storage product for the next decade" and that its current market share of 11 per cent would soon increase.
Donatelli said 3Par will muscle in on some parts of the market where HP already has products, for instance against Eva, while in what HP terms the 'Service Provider / Cloud' market, 3Par will have the run of the show.
Former 3Par chief executive Dave Scott was yesterday appointed as senior vice president and general manager for HP StorageWorks.
Outlining the advantages of 3Par's products, Scott said that much like virtualisation was deployed to utilise spare CPU capacity in servers, 3Par's products allow customers to make efficient use of storage they already have.
Scott said that typically 10 to 20 per cent of storage was being utilised but with 3Par's technology that figure would hit 70 to 80 per cent.
On the question of why a bidding war broke out over his firm, Scott said: " There is no alternative for cloud storage [to 3Par]" – a clear reference to the growing importance of the cloud in enterprise computing.
Asked what the difference was between 3Par and vendors such as Oracle, Siamak Nazari, chief software architect at 3Par, said that its products were "focused simply on storage", whereas Oracle offered a hybrid that "may be a good database server but isn't storage".
