Online radio stations across Europe will soon to be able to sell over the Internet the music they play as it is playing.
Microsoft has teamed up with Getmedia, a Silicon Valley startup, to bring ecommerce to the stations that are Webcast via Windows Media Player.
"This partnership with Microsoft validates our technology," said Robert Goldman, the founder and chief executive of Getmedia. Its technology that takes advantage of impulse buying consumers debuted in May on a San Francisco radio station, [email protected](www.radioalice.com).
Since then 1,200 stations - including the 600 that are available over Windows Media Player - are looking to implement the technology that provides them with a brand new revenue stream. There are Media Player-enabled stations in 26 nations worldwide including most European countries, except France.
Getmedia's ecommerce technology enables radio stations to make money on every CD sold from their site. The service works within a radio station's home page and displays song titles, artists names and album names in realtime as the station plays them.
A playlist carrying the last 10 songs played is refreshed as each new song begins. The site will even include a picture of the CD cover which features the track being aired.
Goldman believes an integrated Getmedia and Microsoft product will be available by the end of the year. By then the company hopes to have arrangements around the world to handle the physical fulfilment of orders.
Getmedia's technology is a Java based application that embeds in a radio station's Web home page. Getmedia handles all installation, orders, customer service and fulfilment on behalf of the radio station. The radio station receives a percentage of revenue from music sales.
