Quantum has dipped its toe into the linear tape open (LTO) tape format market for the first time, providing LTO-1 and LTO-2 support on its two low-end automated tape libraries.
But it will not manufacture the drives, preferring instead to promote its super digital linear tape (SDLT) format. It will source the autoloader LTO drives from Hewlett Packard (HP).
Quantum will provide LTO-1 for the entry-level eight-cartridge Quantum ATL ValueLoader and LTO-1 and LTO-2 for its 16-cartridge ATL SuperLoader.
"Customers have a whole mix of tape drives," said Quantum senior product manager Marjorie Helms. "This move is to maximise market share."
Hamish Macarthur, managing director of storage analyst Macarthur Stroud International, explained that anybody in the library business had to support multiple types.
"At the high end there has been a stronger move towards LTO than expected," he said.
Despite this, Quantum's tape library market share leapt from nine to 30 per cent last year, after Dell and HP moved to ValueLoader products from ADIC and StorageTek respectively, primarily because of their rack-mount capability.
ValueLoader costs £2,520 and is considered a cheap way to get into automated back-up. Quantum's SuperLoader, which is branded by HP and IBM, costs £3,100 to £8,700.
For the ValueLoader, LTO-1 will be available early this month with the DLT VS160 format being added in July. An optional barcode reader capability has also been added. LTO-1 and 2 is now shipping on the SuperLoader.
Quantum plans a raft of LTO and SDLT capacity upgrades for ValueLoader and SuperLoader over the coming two years.
