The Internet has become the greatest single threat to traditional telephone business, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which oversees world telecommunications.
A report, Challenges to the Network, cites the Net as either a great market opportunity or "a parasite which sits on top of the network and drains its life blood without investing very much in its growth and development".
It concludes that the Net is a market opportunity but is concerned it is undermining the operational and economic foundation of the public telephone network.
