Scientists at Bell Labs, the research and development arm of telecomms equipment vendor, Lucent, has discovered a way to extend the battery life of cellular phones.
And engineers also claim the discovery will lead to more powerful wireless base stations.
Most wireless applications currently run on gallium arsenide metal semiconductor field effect transistors, which lack a gate oxide or gadolinium oxide. This means the current is always on, which limits the talk time of cellular phones and the operating time of wireless base stations.
But Bell Labs has managed to grow a gate oxide for gallium arsenide semiconductor transistors, which, it claims, should prolong battery life and improve wireless base stations.
Scientists were surprised with by the discovery, however. Minghwei Hong, Bell Labs materials scientist, said: "You would not expect two vastly different materials to have strong, complete bonds and a defect free interface."
