Technical glitches triggered by a traffic overload left millions of Excite email users in the US unable to access their mail yesterday, but Europe was unaffected according to a company spokesperson.
[email protected] said the traffic overload was caused by a large number of people checking their email after the US Labor Day holiday. A recent radio campaign for an Internet based Voicemail service did not help the situation, the portal company said.
"There were no problems here in the UK or Europe," the spokesperson said, adding that the capacity overload was now under control.
The [email protected] problem is the latest in a string of problems encountered by large providers of Internet based email. Only recently Microsoft suffered a breach in security that left 40 million users of its Hotmail service without password protection.
