More than 200,000 Nintendo DS Lite units were sold in the first 10 days of its European launch to push total sales of the platform over the five million mark in Europe.
"Nintendo DS has introduced thousands of new people to gaming and will continue to expand the gaming population due to its ability to appeal to gamers and non-gamers," said Laurent Fischer, marketing director at Nintendo Europe.
"During the Nintendo DS Lite launch weekend, retailers across Europe said that they had never seen such a vast array of different people buying the product, everyone from businessmen to young women to grandfathers."
The Nintendogs software for the DS has sold three million copies in Europe, following the recent launch of Nintendogs Dalmatian & Friends.
The Nintendo DS Lite console sells for around £100 and is available in black and white.
