Online reseller Buy.com has launched an online software licensing programme in the US for Microsoft products.
Its License Online programme allows customers to purchase the entire line of Microsoft-licensed products from the Buysoft.com Web portal.
The company has also launched in the UK (CRN, 22 March), and said it plans to add more software licences in the future.
Murray Hennessy, chief executive at Buy.com UK, said the licensing programme will be made available only in the US for the moment. "We are, however, looking at an electronic software download scheme as a possible expansion for the UK," he said.
The recent launch of Buy.com in the UK stirred up a retail hornets' nest and sparked a price war when the traditional players realised that they would have to radically drop prices to stay in the race for market dominance (CRN, 5 April).
Greg Hawkins, US chief executive at Buy.com, said when a customer enters an order for a software licence it is forwarded to Microsoft, and the customer should receive the licence within a few days.
"It is a significant move for us to be able to offer our customers a quick, hassle-free method to acquire software licences online," he said.
Buy.com also launched a Volume Licence Software programme for small businesses that need larger quantities of licences.
