Today's potential home owner is young, single and Web-wise, according to latest figures from Internet home loan broker, Independent Mortgage Brokers.
According to the company's current figures, single men outnumber joint mortgage applications by four per cent. The average user is a 35-year-old man seeking a £75,540 loan on a household income of £48,800.
To describe this new social phenomena Independent Mortage brokers have coined the term 'Prisms' - professional, Internet-savvy males.
Anthony Webb, chief executive of Independent Mortgage Brokers, still believes that the greatest business growth for his Internet service in 2000 will come from first-time buyers.
"Since the start of last year, first-time buyers have made up 40 per cent of our business," he explained. "This generation is now so switched on to Internet purchasing that they have no hesitation in coming to us as their first port of call. The older, more traditional consumer often seeks us out due to frustration when conventional services have failed them."
London still dominates the picture in regional terms, with London residents clocking up 21 per cent of all Independent Mortgage Brokers applications last month.
