Sun is expected to announce plans on Tuesday to acquire Star Division, a developer of an office application suite that it wants to make available at low cost or for free over the Internet.
Star Division makes Staroffice, a set of productivity packages that run on operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Linux.
The acquisition will be part of Sun's plan to boost the networking vision of Scott McNealy, its chairman and chief executive, and will be the company's latest attempt to ramp up its applications software business.
