SGI has claimed to be the first company to make available the highest performance networking technology for companies wanting to move large amounts of data such as scientific and storage information.
The Gigabyte System Network (GSN) technology, also known as High Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI)-6400, enables a cluster of computers, servers and storage devices to operate as fast as a massively parallel supercomputer because it is as fast or faster than most system buses.
SGI's GSN technology allows a flow-controlled transmission of user data at up to 800Mbps full duplex and sends information eight times faster than Fibre Channel, ATM OC12, Gigabit Ethernet and HIPPI. The technology is aimed at companies that want to move terabytes of data an hour.
Jan Silverman, vice president of marketing of SGI's computer systems business unit, said: "GSN technology from SGI sets the high-water mark as the highest bandwidth and lowest latency standards based networking technology available."
According to SGI, GSN technology provides current HPPI customers with a migration path by consolidating multiple HIPPI connections with a single GSN interface. An American National Standards Institute (ANSI) draft standard, GSN is also interoperates with ethernet, fibre channel, ATM, HIPPI-800 and other networking standards.
HPPI was created in the 1980s when the US Los Almos National Laboratory needed a connection-switched interconnect that would run at 800Mbps between its Cray Research supercomputers and visualisation devices. The system is used for computer simulations of underground nuclear weapons testing. Other users include Nasa, Disney, Ford Motor Company and Boeing.
