Telecom equipment maker Tellabs is the third company to announce it is to close a plant in Ireland in the last few weeks.
The company said it will close its manufacturing facility in Drogheda and move that work into its Shannon, Ireland, and Espoo, Finland plants.
In addition, Tellabs will reduce its workforce by 1000, or 12 per cent.
The cuts are part of the company's plans to reduce its operating expenses by five per cent by the fourth quarter. Tellabs also will discontinue plans to open an office building in Massachusetts.
High-tech businesses employ about five per cent of Ireland's workforce and account for 25 per cent of its exports.
General Semiconductor, which was the second company to announce a closure in Ireland, said last week it would shut its plant in Macroom in County Cork by the end of this year and transfer the bulk of its business to factories in Taiwan and China.
This announcement followed a similar one by US computer maker Gateway that it plans to shut down its European headquarters outside Dublin and eliminate 900 jobs.
In a statement CEO Richard Notebaert said: "As customers continue to reduce capital spending, we have less work for employees and must take difficult steps to preserve Tellabs' long-term health."
Notebaert said as the company goes forward, it will concentrate resources on its customers' highest priorities.
"The key to Tellabs' long-term success will be to stay relentlessly focused on what customers really need, to enhance our existing products, introduce new products and expand internationally."
