Seer Technologies is trying to reinvent itself in an overcrowded development tools market by moving into the application templates and middleware sector.
The three-year strategic plan is due to be signed off by the board of directors in April and will be launched later that month.
By 2000, the company?s aim is to generate 40-50 per cent of its turnover from application templates, about 35 per cent from middleware and only 15 per cent from its high end development tool, HPS.
HPS, which has traditionally sold into the mainframe space, currently accounts for 90 per cent of Seer?s revenues, with 10 per cent coming from the templates.
Andrew Robinson, Seer?s UK general manager, said: ?We?re not de-emphasising the tools, we?re just trying to find a different way of leveraging them. Last year was a difficult one for us, but this will be a key differentiator over the standard offerings on the marketplace and will generate pull-through sales for HPS.?
Seer obtained its application templates, which are targeted at the wholesale banking market, from First Boston Credit Suisse. The bank developed them using HPS, but Seer packaged them up and sold them to its first customer via EDS at the end of last year.
The supplier will also sell the product direct, but hopes to sign up systems integrators and consultants to build up a third party channel.
It is currently trawling around the rest of its customer base to see whether it could commercialise other templates, for which it plans charge between #500,000 and #5 million.
Seer describes such offerings as ?assets? because they comprise not only the templates themselves, but also entity models, relationship diagrams and process models, which are sold in a populated repository.
On the middleware side, Seer has stripped the protocol switching connectivity software out of HPS and is now selling it as a separate product. Net*Essential enables developers to incorporate such functionality as load balancing and application partioning into their packages. It costs between #500,000 and #1 million.
