Ford Motor US has won the Compass of the Year Award for the second year running, for setting new highs in IT cost efficiency and production quality.
Among other measures, Ford was acclaimed for its ability to acquire hardware and software precisely when it is most cost-competitive and advantageous, said Compass, the organisations that measures the success of IT implementations in organisations.
Ford has offset high industry labour costs by carefully outsourcing selected IT operations and aggressively automating others. It has managed a 33 per cent increase in IT workloads with only a one per cent increase in personnel and a seven per cent rise in costs, while maintaining high levels of service to its customers.
Said Don Storteboom, Ford?s manager of global network and computer operations: ?To ensure we are among the top performers, we must know how we compare against industry leaders. We spend millions of dollars a year on our data centre. It?s imperative that we manage that investment efficiently. External comparative analysis helps us keep our eye on the ball - to know where to cut costs, add automation and become more efficient.?
John Thomas, vice president of marketing at Compass said: ?Ford consistently stays at least a year ahead of the market in terms of IT cost- efficiency. It has avoided traps that other companies fall into. It knows where it is delivering exceptional performance and how to fix problems. It knows when to go outside for services and how to get the best bang for its buck. There?s a lot to learn from how Ford manages its IT business.?
The World Bank of Washington and Cable & Wireless also received awards of excellence for their computing operations. The bank was honoured for its high quality of service levels to its wide area network users at a cost substantially below those of other top-performing companies. The telecomms operator was rewarded for its work in client/server computing.
