A lacklustre keynote speech at Compaq's Innovate 97 from Joe Marengi, president of Novell, has underlined speculation that he is to leave the company.
Marengi staked Novell's claim to have a future as a major player in the PC industry on its network directory services (NDS) strategy, and said that the lack of similar features in Windows NT Server gave his company an advantage.
Over the next 10 years, industry players had to work together more closely, he said. "Customers today say they have freedom of choice. Many large corporations had heteregeneous systems and that would stay the case for a long time.
The Intranet was the way forward for the industry, he said. "Spending on intranet software will exceed $10 billion in the next four years," Marengi said. "Novell is actively involved in the specification for IP version 6," he said. "We've joined forces with a number of different companies to put our platforms forwards."
That meant a change for his company. "Novell's strategy is to move beyond our dominance in the local area network. The future is client networking and not client server. We're focusing on collaborating network services and the server operating environment." Marengi said: "The layer of network services actually becomes the platform. Both NT and Unix have had significant market share. Novell doesn't make NT or Unix but it will make them work in the network."
He continued: "Our software solutions use our directory to integrate networks, reducing costs and the need to administer networks through cumbrous NT directories. By late summer, Novell will make NDS run on NT servers natively."
Customers could expect more networking services from Novell and NDS held 24 per cent market share worldwide, he said.
Marengi demonstrated software called Border Services which will be a suite aimed at integrating NT, Unix and Netware servers. "These services will become intelligent intermediaries on networks," he said, and will arrive by the end of the summer.
"Directories will have the biggest impact of any other technology on the Internet," he claimed. "Without them it's a bit like going into a supermarket to find a can when none of the cans have labels on."
Marengi made little or no reference to Java throughout his keynote speech to the Compaq delegates, a pointed snub at his new boss, Eric Schmidt.
