A Chinese computer expert has denied that the Code Red worm originated in China, despite some infected US Government websites showing the message "hacked by Chinese" after they were attacked.
The worm installs itself on servers then launches mass scans of other websites slowing them down or even bringing them to a halt.
Wang Jianfeng, assistant manager at Beijing antivirus firm Ruixing Computer Development, told Reuters: "One thing I can be sure of is that it was not created by a Chinese person. Its appearance and its spreading did not start in China."
He added that Ruixing had not received any calls about the worm in China. "The virus has had more of an effect in Europe and the United States," he said.
