The Anonymous collective of online protesters has explained the reasoning behind its aborted attack on Amazon’s web sites, saying that it decided against a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack as it would be “in poor taste”.
In a further twist to the long-running WikiLeaks saga, Anonymous issued a press release online today clarifying its reasons for attacking MasterCard, PayPal and Visa sites as part of the Operation Payback campaign.
“The point of Operation Payback was never to target critical infrastructure of any of the companies or organisations affected,” the group said.
Rather than doing that, we focused on their corporate web sites, which is to say, their online ‘public face’.”
The group revealed that despite calls from “parts of Anonymous” on Twitter made yesterday, calling for Amazon.com to be targeted, an attack was called off and PayPal targeted again instead.
“While it is indeed possible that Anonymous may not have been able to take Amazon.com down in a DDoS attack, this is not the only reason the attack never occurred,” the statement read.
“After the attack was so advertised in the media, we felt that it would affect people such as consumers in a negative way and make them feel threatened by Anonymous. Simply put, attacking a major online retailer when people are buying presents for their loved ones, would be in bad taste.”
