Companies using Lotus Notes and Domino can now link their back-end Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and databases into an intranet using the Real Web Business package from Real Information Systems.
Based entirely on Notes technology, Real Web Business is a content creation and management tool, designed for marketing and other non-technical people, which uses Notes' built-in workflow capabilities to implement approval processes and notification via Email.
Using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) as well as Notes' built-in security, the package can be deployed over an extranet as well, allowing customers and suppliers access to relevant company information stored in legacy databases and ERP systems.
Neil Hughes, managing director of Real Information Systems, said, "With Real Web Business, companies can use (links into their existing systems) to cost-effectively generate new sources of revenue by capitalising on their existing information assets."
Although based on IBM technologies such as Notes, Domino and AS/400, Real Web Business can also link with products from other ERP and database vendors such as Oracle, Informix and SAP. Information from these stores is then fed into Notes databases, from where it is accessible to the Web Business content creation package. This handles the approval process and allows non-technical staff to put together product catalogues, price lists, and pages with other company information.
Once this content has been approved, it is sent to a Domino server which publishes it to the Web. Any transactions carried out on the Web site are then fed directly back to the database or ERP systems, updating the content automatically. A number of plug-in modules are available for specific tasks such as online credit card processing, knowledge management, customer tracking, help desk management and marketing campaign management.
Victor Aberdeen, Internet product marketing manager at Lotus, described Real Web Business as "cool technology". The smart thing is the way it integrates everything," he enthused. Lotus already offers Ecommerce solutions with Domino and Real Information Systems may be limiting itself to the installed base of Notes users, but Aberdeen disagreed. "We don't see this as competitive, but supportive of Domino. It will appeal to any company with a heterogeneous database environment, and could fuel sales of Domino. The success of Domino is dependent on partners."
