Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue rose by 16 per cent year on year to $4.6bn (£2.9bn) in the third quarter, as companies continue to favour the technology over frame-based disk systems, according to Gartner.
Terabytes shipped increased by a significant 60.4 per cent from the same period in 2009, while the average price per terabyte fell by 28 per cent.
EMC, NetApp and Fujitsu all showed double-digit revenue growth during the quarter. EMC maintained its top position after strong V-Max series sales, increasing its market share by 3.4 per cent to 26.9 per cent, Gartner noted.
IBM's market share dropped slightly, but the firm maintained second position just ahead of HP with revenue of $202m (£129m).
NetApp continued to close the gap on the top three vendors with an increase in market share of just over two per cent. This was put down to its storage efficiency message attracting end-users with budget and datacentre space constraints, the report found.
Fujitsu recorded the highest growth in the quarter, seeing revenue rise 60 per cent despite continuing to be a small player in the market. The firm's Eternus storage subsystems drove year-on-year growth, generating $26.5m (£16.9m) in revenue.
Hitachi Data Systems was the only vendor to show a decline, reporting a fall of 6.3 per cent year on year owing to the release of the virtual storage platform and slow growth of its older USP-V and USP-VM platforms.
IT executives continue to invest in ECB disk storage, even though budgets remain tight, according to Roger Cox, a research vice president at Gartner.
"Significant investment examples include shared ECB disk storage support for virtualised server and desktop deployments, disk-based backup and recovery modernisation, as well as new disk-based active archiving projects," he said.
"General-purpose ECB disk storage infrastructures are also being refreshed to take advantage of new technologies that simplify storage management, reduce operational costs, improve utilisation and satisfy expanding service level agreements."
