Deutsche Telekom is rumoured to be in "late stage" acquisition talks with the UK?s Cable & Wireless (C&W).
The speculation came within hours of reports that the German telecomms giant was about to buy Telecom Italia to help save it from the clutches of Olivetti.
C&W is headed by Graham Wallace, former boss of C&W Communications, who has always refuted the notion of a takeover. He replaced Richard Brown, who left to head up EDS in January and was best known for his acquisition of MCI?s Internet business.
But this is not the first time that C&W has been linked with Deutsche Telekom. As far back as 1997, the firm was allegedly keen to join the German company?s Global One international alliance with the US?s Sprint and France Telecom.
