Microsoft is to link together Xbox consoles, its Xbox Live service and PCs with its new XSN Sports games series.
Gamers will be able to set up leagues, build tournaments and analyse scouting reports on a centralised XSN website, XSNsports.com.
"The ability to create customised leagues and tournaments among your group of friends, where the competition truly matters, is the breakthrough sports gamers have been waiting for," said Ed Fries, corporate vice president of Xbox games publishing at Microsoft.
"XSN Sports will revolutionise sports video games as we know them."
XSNsports.com allows the creation of a password-protected 16-game season. It provides players with their own virtual sports page detailing their exploits and listing statistics, standings, tendencies and transfer proposals, updated every 15 minutes.
The first XSN title, NFL Fever 2004, will be released next year.
