The Jaguar Racing Formula One team is extending its use of product lifecycle management software to improve the production and performance of its racing cars.
Jaguar is adding software modules to its existing lifecycle management platform to link departmental workloads to a project management tool to create operational efficiencies and ultimately produce faster, race-winning cars.
It is also implementing a collaborative web environment for the race team to talk to the factory. Each department can update changes to a car's design or parts specification centrally, in real time, to maintain one single view of the car.
Matt Cadieux, Jaguar Racing's IT and business systems manager, said: "We had a lot of people keying in a lot of the same information across multiple systems, lots of data discrepancies, and ultimately that wasted time and affected the quality of the car."
Using an existing relationship with product lifecycle management software vendor UGS, Jaguar is extending the Teamcenter Engineering platform as the digital backbone of its cars' design process.
The UGS Teamcenter platform manages computer-aided design data and links engineering workflows and the new collaborative and project management modules.
As a result, Jaguar Racing is now able to produce a single detailed list of car specifications materials that replaced four or five different sets from different areas of the company.
The engineering and manufacturing groups now have the same view of information, which can be shared with the race team using the collaborative module.
"Everybody now has a common view of what the car is, what the latest components of the car are and [we don't have] a lot of the disconnects that were in our systems before," said Cadieux.
"Things that happened relatively informally before don't happen [in such an informal way] anymore. It takes a lot of the variability out of the equation and is better to control cost.
"If we look at the car itself, it's roughly four seconds quicker this year than it was last so, by taking a more engineering-led approach, we are seeing it affect the performance of the car. Things run much smoother than they did in the past."
