The National History Museum has deployed new content management software to allow it to expand its online operations.
The museum will migrate the management of its website onto Percussion Software's Rythmyx 5 content management software by the first quarter of next year.
Ailsa Barry, head of interactive media at the museum, explained that the new software, combined with in-house resources, would allow more updating and customisation of information and help expansion into new areas.
"[The software] will enable us to manage the content and have a very systematic architecture," she said.
"We want to be able to expand onto different platforms, and have a link between the experience of the physical museum and the website."
Barry explained that the museum had been looking for a package that was customisable but not too labour-intensive.
"We went for an off-the-shelf package because we had a certain amount of expertise in-house," she said. "But we did not want a system that was very bespoke. Rythmyx 5 was bespoke but flexible."
It will be used by staff to publish content directly to the website, while allowing the IT team to develop reusable web templates and maintain the site.
Since the launch of its website in 1994, the museum has added a staff intranet and a series of visitor kiosks onsite, and the new software will also be used to manage content for these channels.
Staff are currently being trained to use the software while Barry and her team work with third-party designers and developers to finalise other technical design features of the new cross-channel platform, including integration with the museum's databases and applications.
