The Metropolitan Police is advising owners of internet cafés to spy on their customers, according to an Associated Press report.
The force has said that owners should keep any eye on any suspicious activity in an attempt to exert control over public web spaces.
Owners have been asked to keep an eye on any dodgy goings-on and report customer behaviour back to the police.
The move is part of a new directive under the government's counterterrorism strategy. This initiative has already been trialled over the past few weeks and will now be rolled out in full, according to the report.
Desktops and laptops in cafés taking part in the initiative will be decked out in police logos as a warning.
Associated Press reported an anonymous officer who told them more about the scheme.
"It's not about asking owners to spy on their customers. It's about raising awareness. We don't ask them to pass on data for us," the officer said.
But the officer added that police were "encouraging people to check on hard drives".
