Nearly half of the world's most popular web sites, including Google and Facebook, perform well on mobile devices, according to a survey from domain name registry DotMobi.
Some 40 per cent of the top 1,000 sites on web information company Alexa provide a friendly mobile experience, as firms look to gain an advantage when competing for visitors, sales and customer loyalty, the survey found.
However, the number of mobile friendly sites decreased as more sites were analysed. Around 29 per cent of the top 10,000 Alexa sites have a good mobile counterpart, and this fell to 19.3 per cent when 500,000 sites were examined.
Tim Shepherd, an analyst at Canalys, noted that many sites provide a friendly portable experience, highlighting the mobile versions of the BBC and Facebook as prime examples.
"Consumers want to be able to view a good level of content on their devices, and there is an expectation on handset manufacturers and site creators to provide this," he told V3.co.uk.
"Mobile sites shouldn't necessarily be the same as the desktop version. Firms need to think about functionality by using location or camera elements on a device, and may even have to leave out some features to provide a streamlined experience."
Smartphones such as the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S are capable of providing an internet experience close to desktop browsers, but Shepherd said that many people do not have devices capable of providing such an experience.
"Firms wanting their site to make an impact in the mobile market need to remember to cater for people with simple handsets who need to consume content in a scaled down manner," he said.
But as the price point of smartphones is driven down and they become more popular, this will affect the expected quality of browsing, Shepherd added.
