Telewest Communications is one of the UK's first cable operators to achieve a pre-tax profit, although it still made a net loss of #250.9 million for the year.
The year-end pre-tax earnings of #465,000 compared with losses of #28 million last year. Total revenue increased by 52 per cent to #290.3 million. Revenues from business telephony represented the biggest increase, up 68 per cent to #34.6 million.
Chief executive Stephen Davidson said: ?I am very pleased with our strong fourth quarter results in cable television and with earnings before deductions being positive for the first time over a full year. This highlights a new phase for Telewest.?
