Worldwide enterprise router revenues look set to surge by over 400 per cent in the second quarter of this year, from $896m to over $4bn by 2006.
In its quarterly worldwide market share and forecast report on enterprise routers, Infonetics Research has predicted that rapid sales growth will be accompanied by 'significant market share shifts', which will begin to manifest themselves in the coming months.
Cisco continued to dominate the enterprise router market in in the second quarter, with 88 per cent revenue market share for high-end routers and 84 per cent for mid-range routers.
But the company trailed Vanguard in the low-end and small office/home (SoHo) office router revenue category for the second quarter in a row.
Infonetics Research's Neil Osipuk, lead analyst of the report, said: "Interesting times are in store for the enterprise router market: we're going to see major upheaval over the next 18 months.
"Vendors are entering and re-entering the market with disruptive pricing to win over channel partners, enticing them with greater margins."
Vendors such as Adtran and Enterasys are making headway in the low-end/SoHo and mid-range markets, via all-purpose devices that integrate voice and security features into routers.
"These changes are going to heat up the competition and notably shake up market share distribution," Osipuk added.
One of the fastest growth areas has been the low-end SoHo/small and medium business sector, which saw unit shipments increase by 18 per cent in the second quarter this year from the previous quarter.
However, continued pricing pressure saw total revenue spend for the sector fall by 21 per cent, to $51m.
Infonetics Research predicts that worldwide mid-range enterprise router revenue will grow to $1.7bn by 2006, up 17 per cent from 2003, driven by enterprise branch office spending.
