France Telecom and Bouygues Telecom are among 11 companies that this week joined the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum, a group developing standards for viewing Internet content on mobile phones.
The WAP Forum, created in February by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and WAP software developer Unwired Planet, now has 71 members. In the UK, Cellnet and Vodafone are already members of the forum.
Other new members joining this week are Acer Peripherals, Bell Atlantic Mobile, Dr Materna, GSM Information network, Omnitel, Sony International, Tecnomen, Telital and Unisys.
Several European cellular operators that support the WAP protocol have announced trials using WAP technology developed by Unwired Planet, including SFR-Cegetel in France and Telecom Italia.
