Compaq has today announced two new additions to its Aero family of handheld products, with the claim that it now has the thinnest, lightest Windows CE device on the market.
However, only weeks after Compaq's first colour handheld devices hit the shelves, the newest addition to the family - the Aero 1500 - is only available in monochrome.
According to Compaq executives, feedback from customer focus groups revealed that users were willing to sacrifice colour for lower pricing and smaller size.
The 1500 is only half and inch thick, weighs less than five ounces and is designed to fit into a shirt pocket.
The device, which includes contacts, calendar and email features, also has the ability to connect wirelessly via GSM or infrared and has 14 hours continuous battery life.
In addition, the 1500 has audio recording and playback capabilities for MP3 and other audio programmes and a virtually unlimited expandability via Compactflash for memory, modem, bar code scanners, GPS receivers and digital cameras.
The device, which costs £299 including VAT, will be available from the end of this month.
Also today, Compaq launched a new high end Palm size PC - the Aero 2160 with 24Mbytes of memory and a 64K colour screen.
Priced at £361 excluding VAT, the 2160 is also available at the end of the month.
Although Compaq's chief executive said last week that the company would be launching a handheld device with a built in GSM phone(see Newswire 16 September), the company is still unable to confirm when this launch will take place.
