Consumer and corporate buying patterns are holding back the adoption of cutting edge PC technologies, a new report claims.
Research from IT analysts at IDC said that, despite rapid technological advancements, consumers are finding that lower end systems, without all the bells and whistles, are adequately meeting their needs.
In addition, corporate buyers, especially those in larger organisations, are requesting slow and methodical technology migrations and stable products in order to control management costs and keep their IT environment operating at optimal productivity.
According to IDC, this behaviour is pulling in the reins on adoption of the latest PC technologies and the company predicted that as a result, in the near future, successful products will focus less on frills like multimedia and videoconferencing and more on technology enhancements such as faster CPUs and larger hard drives, while using lower end graphics and audio to keep prices down.
On the other hand, the report also revealed that the mobile market is advancing at a breakneck pace.
Thinner, lighter designs and increased performance, together with new lower priced portables, are driving rapid growth in this market.
Reduced prices are helping to position notebooks for the first time, as viable alternatives to their desktop counterparts, and are forcing down pricing for the higher end mobile products.
Katrina Dahlquist, senior mobile computing analyst at IDC, commented: ?A collapse in notebook pricing is redefining the low end notebook?s image, design and features. Traditionally, notebooks priced under $2,000 were primarily end-of-life systems sold through retail and close-out channels such as price clubs and catalogues. Today these products are priced under $1,500, and an increasing percentage of configurations are new designs at $1,499 price points.?
Dahlquist also predicted that Windows 98 would not have a major impact on the portable PC market and that, although Intel continues to dominate the notebook arena, AMD and Cyrix are beginning to catch up.
