NTL, one of the UK's principle telecoms operators, has bought ComTel and Diamond Cable, the fourth and seventh largest UK cable companies for #1.4 billion. The deals mean the number of UK cable companies has declined from 24 to five in five years. NTL missed out on the deal for General Cable, pipped to the post by Telewest, which is vying with Cable & Wireless Communicatins to be the UK's largest cable company. NTL now ranks third.
All three companies are racing to provide Internet access via cable TV to the home user.
