Eidos, the computer games maker famous for Tomb Raider, has purchased US rival development studio Crystal Dynamics for #28.4 million.
Crystal Dynamics? product portfolio includes GEX, Pandemonium! 1 and Legacy of the Kain, which combined have sold three million units.
?The interactive entertainment software market is hit driven,? said a statement from Eidos.
Access to high quality, proven development groups with a broad range of products under development is the key to improving Eidos? likelihood of achieving a greater than average number of hit products, suggests Eidos.
Crystal Dynamics is currently developing Gex III, Kain: Soul Reaver and The Unholy War for release next year. As well as creating games for the Playstation and PCs, the studio has just received approval to design games for the Nintendo 46 platform.
Eidos? strategy is to structure its internal development groups into a series of autonomous studios which share central resources. Crystal Dynamics will slot into this business ethos, confirmed a spokesperson for Eidos.
