Mobile operators must show businesses the benefits of mobile applications if the technology is to take off, according to a Nokia survey.
Nokia said customer concerns - regarding security, for instance - hinder the take-up of mobile applications. But analyst Schema said the complexity of the infrastructure and systems integration needed behind the applications is the real big problem.
Janne Laiho, market research manager at Nokia, said customer concerns would not be quelled until companies are educated to the merits of mobile applications, and until issues such as security are tackled.
Six hundred companies were interviewed for the survey. Respondents said they were cautious about levels of access, hackers and fraud, corruption of data and encryption.
"It's up to companies like us to tell customers what the benefits of mobility in the enterprise are," said Laiho. "There is a lack of knowledge of what mobility can achieve for the enterprise."
However Robin Bosworth, director at telecoms analysts Schema, said: "The real complexity is embedded in the application.
"Getting the payment, resource scheduling, delivery systems - all these have to work well with each other. That is the big headache and it's the same no matter what the application is."
Bosworth added that the most important consideration for companies embarking on mobile applications was to ensure that transactions could be verified.
