Dixons is to hire more than 200 staff to look after its hardware and software support desks as sales swell for its subsidiary companies.
The staff are being hired at Dixons Mastercare Personal Computer Services centre, in Nottingham, which provides hardware and software support for subsidiary stores including Currys, PC World, and the Link. The Mastercare centre, which is the largest in the UK, opened in July last year and has been flooded with more than 5,000 inquiries a day.
Director Keith Martin-Smith said the extra staff would effectively double the size of the Centre and would be distributed between the hardware and software helpdesks.
The plan is to take on recruits quickly and have them trained by November, when Dixons expect sales to get more hectic in the pre-Christmas rush.
Martin-Smith said: "The sale of PCs and related products is Dixons' fastest growth area with sales of about #700million last year. We are expecting it to continue to grow fast."
He said that Dixons, whose stores account for about 15 per cent of the hardware/software retail market, was experiencing a consumer boom caused by the building society pay-outs, but had actually planned the expansion six months ago. "We wanted to expand the centre as we expected to see an increase in PC/software sales as the economy picked up. It is not really a knock-on effect from the recent consumer boom, we really did want to improve our customer service," Martin-Smith said.
