Troubled telco WorldCom has signed a deal with reseller Comtralis as it continues to engage the channel in broadband partnerships.
Comtralis, a voice and data convergence specialist, has agreed to resell WorldCom's basic bandwidth and add its convergence expertise on top.
"We are always looking to recruit the right sort of partners that can add value on top of selling basic bandwidth," said Andrew Lowe, director of indirect sales, EMEA, at WorldCom.
Darren Hayward, sales director at Comtralis, explained that its convergence expertise will play a key role in WorldCom's development in this sector.
"We provide the convergence hardware and software to the WorldCom bandwidth and I expect WorldCom to sign more channel partners with voice and data expertise," he said.
The telco was given approval for restructuring in the US following its Chapter 11 filing, but Lowe is keen to point out that the company did not go into administration in Europe.
WorldCom currently has about 300 contracted resellers in the UK, servicing customers ranging from small offices up to large corporates.
All receive the same level of support from the company's direct sales teams. "Each reseller receives a partner manager and access to full technical support," said Lowe.
Hayward explained that the highly publicised accountancy malpractice at WorldCom in the US has not deterred Comtralis from working with the telco strategically.
"I do not think it will be easy for WorldCom with the economic problems, and it is difficult to justify with our customers why we are working with a company which was in Chapter 11 in the US," he said.
"But all vendors in this sector are going through hard times. WorldCom has a good reseller infrastructure."
WorldCom operates three separate sales divisions covering businesses up to 500 employees, corporates and global organisations. "The channel overlaps into all of these," said Lowe.
