Orange, the UK's youngest cellular phone operator, surprised the industry with its plans to double its investment into its core network.
It also plans to triple the number of base stations, and is expected to be close to unveiling developments to bring Internet content onto handsets.
The operator had suggested it would plough #400 million into expanding its network, but yesterday said it would double this to #800 million.
