Mobile operator 3 has claimed that it can offer over 70 per cent population coverage for video mobile services after completing the building and integration of its 5,000th radio base station.
The firm said that the infrastructure improvements, together with its existing national roaming agreements, gives it over 98 per cent voice coverage.
The 3G operator claims to have undertaken one of the fastest network rollouts in European telecoms history, with up to 200 base stations being installed every week.
Under contracts announced in April 2001, NEC is supplying radio infrastructure for the southern half of the UK and Nokia for the north.
David Cooper, chief technology officer at 3, said: "This is a truly remarkable achievement as the network has been installed and optimised in just over two years.
"It is probably the fastest wireless rollout ever achieved in Europe."
Rajeev Suri, vice president and general manager of Nokia Networks, added: "3G is a superior technology to existing networks in that it can deliver faster and higher quality of media content to an ever demanding consumer.
"We are committed to 3's leading position in this market."
